Dr. Long V. Nguyen is Founder of Pragmatics, Inc., an information technology firm based in Reston, VA.  He provides overall strategic guidance and direction to senior management in operations, business development and finance. Pragmatics was established in 1985 and delivers innovative solutions to clients in numerous defense and civilian agencies, including the Departments of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Homeland Security, State, Commerce, Treasury, Transportation, and Labor.  Over the years, Pragmatics has performed on more than 1,000 projects for more than 100 different customers.  Pragmatics has been externally appraised at CMMI Level 5 (highest level), one of very few companies (world-wide) at that level.  Pragmatics is also registered for ISO 9001, 20,000 and 27,000.  Prior to Pragmatics, Dr. Nguyen had a distinguished academic career, in which he taught computer science at Georgetown University, Indiana University-Purdue University.

He also served as a member of the Transition Committee for Virginia’s Governor-Elect Tim Kaine in 2005.

A longtime philanthropist, Dr. Nguyen has established relief funds for numerous disasters, including 9/11 victims, an earthquake in Nepal, a typhoon in the Philippines, tornadoes and storms in Oklahoma, an earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Hurricane Sandy, an earthquake in Haiti, and Hurricane Katrina.  Supporting our nation’s wounded veterans and their families is also important to him, and he has made numerous donations over many years to benefit and support them.

For the Vietnamese community in America, Dr. Nguyen:

• Contributed substantially to the Smithsonian Vietnamese American Heritage Endowment
• Contributed for 30 years to VN Association for the Handicapped to provide artificial limbs and wheelchairs to wounded warriors in VN
• Contributed over the years to many organizations such as AALead, Scout Jamborees, Vietnamese Student Associations

For the Vietnamese people in Vietnam, Dr. Nguyen:

• Provided scholarships to students at the University of Ho Chi Minh City
• Supported a Da Nang Hospital
• Provided financial support and lunch to poor patients and their families at Hue hospital
• Provided financial support for cataract operations to poor patients at a Can Tho hospital
• Built a kindergarten school educating about 150 children
• Provided about 100 scholarships every year for 20 years

He has created endowments at both George Mason University and Iowa State University in honor of his past academic advisors.  In 2007, he established the Lanh and Oanh Nguyen (his parents) Endowed Chair in Software Engineering at Iowa State University.  In 2009, he and his wife donated $5M to the School of Engineering/IT at George Mason University which names the new Engineering Building after them.

Dr. Nguyen earned his undergraduate degree in physics at North Carolina State University, his master’s degree, also in physics, at University of Virginia, and his doctorate in computer science at Iowa State University.

Trước khi thành lập Pragmatics, Tiến sĩ Long từng là Giáo Sư giảng dạy môn khoa học vi tính tại Đại học Georgetown, Đại học Indiana, và Đại Học Purdue.

Ông cũng từng là thành viên của Ủy ban Chuyển Tiếp Quyền Lực (Transition Team) Tiểu Bang Virginia của Thống Đốc Tim Kaine năm 2005.

Ông cũng từng là thành viên của Ủy ban Điều Hành (Board of Visitors) Đại học George Mason từ năm 2002 đến năm 2010.

Là người giầu thiện tâm, Tiến sĩ Long đã thành lập quỹ cứu trợ cho nạn nhân nhiều thảm hoạ, đáng kể là:

• Nạn nhân động đất ở Nepal,
• Nạn nhân bão lụt ở Philippines,
• Nạn nhân bão lốc xoáy ở Oklahoma,
• Nạn nhân động đất và sóng thần ở Nhật Bản,

• Nạn nhân động đất ở Haiti,
• Nạn nhân cơn bão Harvey, Katrina, Irma….

Tiến Sĩ Long cũng đã đóng góp rất nhiều vào các quỹ tương trợ thương binh, cựu quân nhân và gia đình của họ tại Hoa Kỳ .

Đối với cộng đồng người Việt ở Mỹ, Tiến sĩ Long:

• Đóng góp cho Quỹ Bảo toàn Di sản Người Mỹ gốc Việt của Viện Smithsonian
• Đóng góp 30 năm cho Hội Tương Trợ Người Khuyết Tật VN để cung cấp chân tay giả và xe lăn cho các thương binh ở Việt Nam
• Đóng góp nhiều năm cho các hiệp hội như AALead, Hội Hướng Đạo Sinh, Hội Ái Hữu Sinh viên Việt Nam

Đối với người Việt Nam trong nước, Tiến sĩ Long:

• Cấp học bổng cho sinh viên trường Đại học Khoa Học Thành phố Sài Gòn
• Hỗ trợ bệnh viện ở Đà Nẵng
• Phụ cấp tài chính và tài trợ bữa ăn trưa cho bệnh nhân nghèo cùng gia đình tại Bệnh Viện Huế
• Góp phần tài trợ phí tổn giúp bệnh nhân nghèo giải phẫu cắt thủy tinh thể mắt tại bệnh viện Cần Thơ
• Xây trường mẫu giáo chuyên dậy dỗ khoảng 150 trẻ em
• Cấp khoảng 100 học bổng hàng năm trong 20 năm vừa qua

Tiến Sĩ Long đã thành lập các quỹ học bỗng tại:

• Đại học George Mason và Đại học Iowa State để vinh danh các Giáo Sư từng hướng dẫn khi Ông còn theo học.
• Năm 2007, ông thành lập Quỹ Lanh and Oanh Nguyễn Software Engineering cho Phân Khoa Kỹ Sư Tin Học tại Đại Học Iowa State lấy tên song thân là Nguyễn Văn Lành và Võ thị Oanh của Ông để kỷ niệm công ơn sinh thành dưỡng dục.
• Năm 2009, Ông và Phu Nhân tặng 5 triệu đô la cho Trường Kỹ Sư và Quản Lý Tin Học tại Đại học George Mason và trường đã vinh danh bằng cách dùng tên hai Ông Bà đặt cho tòa nhà Kỹ Sư mới xây của trường.
